It indicates that the written word shouldn't be considered as the opinion of the author. '\s' on the other hand has a clear meaning. So adding an emoji, does make it better, but it doesn't solve Poe's law IMHO the ' see you later virgins'-meme?Īnd then there is the problem, that the actual emoji drawn is different depending on the device used. So you have again the problem, that you need background knowledge of the author.Īnd even if it's clear, emojis are often also used ironically, e.g. But some people would translate ' )' into ?.

Is it a sort of friendly 'gotcha, because you didn't consider fact x'? Is it some kind of sexual advance? Is it a joke? Is it full out sarcasm?ĭoes the person uses it 'correctly'? A '?' could be used instead of ' )'. There is no clear definition, what a wink-emoji means. Regarding these Japanese camps it would be a good idea to memorize these, however I think there are a lot more pressing issues within american history than these camps throughout WW2. Therefore I as a German am generally fine with the american perspective on WW2. What the US did pales by several orders of magnitude in comparison to what the Germans, the Japanese and the Russians did throughout the war (and before the war started). When a war at the scale and magnitude of WW2 is fought outrocities are inevitable, there will be rapes, massacres and the like, it is simply unavoidable once the war started. When put under a lot of stress we act irrationally, and those years of war definitely were incredibly stressfull for the civilians and even more so for the soldiers. We struggle to admit our mistakes, let alone to ask forgiveness. Then again we are human, and we should be allowed to act irrational. It also was certainly wrong to not reimburse all the damage done to these japanese civilians. Even if the american paranoia that led to those internment camps was unfound it was not without reason. It certainly was not right to detain Japanese civilians, however there was a war being fought with outraging cruelty from the opposing side. Yeah, you may have done things that seem atrocious in hindsight, but I'd try to put it into perspective. I as a German would say that WW2 is the one war where the americans can rightfully claim to be the good guys. Instead of being executed, he is placed in a Strafbattalion (Penal Battalion), under the command of Oberfeldwebel Krebs.Īccording to the ending scene of "Unsere Mütter Unsere Väter" he is still alive. He then seeks refuge in a cabin by a lake where he is arrested as a deserter by Feldgendarmerie officers. Facing the death of his whole platoon to achieve a questionable objective, he walks away from the front line after suffering from a concussion caused by a Panzerfaust anti-tank explosive. As the war goes on, the hope for a quick victory evaporates and so does his naïve idealism. In Russia he executes a prisoner in accordance with the Commissar Order. He is also determined to do what he considers his duty as a Wehrmacht officer commanding an infantry platoon.
Wilhelm firmly believes he is bound by honour to fight as a soldier for his home country. After previously serving in Poland and France he moves on to serve on the Russian Front from the beginning of Operation Barbarossa. Oberleutnant Wilhelm Winter is a Heer officer.
